Ryan – who’s set to return as the Merc with a Mouth for a third movie – has told fans that he’s taking a short break from acting, after wrapping filming on his latest project, Spirited.
Alongside a series of behind-the-scenes images of Ryan and his co-stars, the actor announced on Instagram that he feels it’s the “perfect time for a little sabbatical from movie making”.
“These days, kindness matters as much as talent,” he added, after paying tribute to Spirited‘s cast and crew, including Will Ferrell and Octavia Spencer. “I’ve been lucky to work with folks who are flush with both.”
Opening up about his experience on Spirited, Ryan admitted that he was initially apprehensive about committing to “a film this challenging”.
“[But] singing, dancing and playing in the sandbox with Will Ferrell made a whole lotta dreams come true,” he continued. “I’m gonna miss every second working with this obscenely gifted group of creators and artists.”
Blake Lively was also on hand in the comments to have some fun with her husband’s announcement, joking: “Michael Caine did it first” – referencing the news that the British star had supposedly announced his retirement from acting (something he has since clarified he won’t be doing).
What Ryan’s sabbatical means for the timeline of Deadpool 3 remains unclear, but Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige revealed earlier this year that the star had been “working very hard” on the threequel’s script.
Feige also hinted that a release date had been pencilled in, following Disney‘s takeover of the property back in 2019.
“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now,” the Marvel boss said previously. “It’s exciting for it to have begun… [Deadpool is a] very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature.”
