Dune Director says most Marvel movies are just a ‘copy paste’ of each other
Denis Villeneuve thinks most Marvel movies are too similar to each other, enough to call them a ‘copy paste’
Dune director Denis Villeneuve has quite a lot of critical successes under his belt. Apart from his upcoming expected blockbuster Dune, he has worked on Blade Runner 2049. It is considered by critics and nerds alike to be the perfect sequel ever and an absolute critical success. In a recent interview with Spanish outlet El Mundo, Villeneuve was asked about Martin Scorsese and his views on Marvel movies and their success. And he used much more scathing words than Scorsese, calling them a ‘cut and paste’ of each other:
Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a ‘cut and paste’ of others. Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit… But big and expensive movies of great value, there are many today. I don’t feel capable of being pessimistic at all.
The Blade Runner 2049 director further clarifies that he has nothing against big-budget films
Dune also has a budget that is commensurate with that of Marvel films. However, it has a different framework and model compared to most Marvel films. And Denis Villeneuve admitted to that. He said he has no problem with mega-budget movies. His main issue is with the artistic relevance and the value behind the movies, continuing:
Just think of the golden age of Hollywood to see that commercial films can make a different artistic proposal and, therefore, political. I have never felt like a loss or an impediment to have a generous budget to do what I wanted to do. Upside down. Who said that a movie on a big budget can’t be artistically relevant at the same time? I am currently thinking of people like Christopher Nolan or Alfonso Cuarón.

The Dune director has noticed the ‘formula’ that Marvel has behind most films. And it is public knowledge that Kevin Feige is quite stringent with how each Marvel film must be like. It’s like a tried and tested formula which always delivers success. But, doing so comes at the cost of creativity and the filmmaker’s own innovativeness. Moreover, Denis Villeneuve hasn’t said all Marvel movies are bad. Some of the movies made by James Gunn and Taika Waititi are quite sound movies. However, it would be interesting to see how Villeneuve would react if he is offered to direct a Marvel movie.
